CLIMB (Collaborative Laboratory Internships and Mentoring Blueprint)

The University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL) is located in close proximity to some of the poorest and lowest performing school districts in the state. Being part of an anchor institution, the chemistry is deeply committed to increasing the number of students from neighboring, high need districts that have early exposure to research experience and STEM careers and opportunities to pursue STEM degrees at UMSL.

Engaging high school students into research offers an engaging way to expose students to STEM careers.

The Jennings High School Internship program funded privately and managed by biology professor Patricia Parker from UMSL. Jennings High School is comprised of almost 100% African American students. The program offers a paid summer research experience for students from the Jennings high school, and is accompanied by a framework program to give the students career advice. The department hosts about five students per summer within the Jennings program. The program has been expanded recently and now called CLIMB.
